Description

The gravestone to George Romney is located approximately 12 metres south of the Church of St Mary in Dalton in Furness. This graveslab, dating from 1802, was restored in 1895 by Miles of Ulverston. It features a slate slab set on a limestone plinth. The slab has a short Latin inscription commemorating George Romney, who died on November 15, 1802. The moulded plinth includes the inscription: "THIS MEMORIAL WAS RESTORED BY JOHN ORDE ROMNEY OF WHITESTOCK HALL IN THIS COUNTY IN THE YEAR OF OUR LORD 1895." George Romney was born nearby at Beckside on December 15, 1734, and became the third of the fashionable portrait painters during the era of Reynolds and Gainsborough.
