Description

Oakdene is a house and cottage that was formerly known as The Ship Hotel, dated 'T.E. 1683', and has been altered over time. The building is pebble-dashed with a graduated slate roof and consists of two storeys, featuring a two-to-one window arrangement on the first floor. There is a wing at the rear of No. 5A on the right side.

No. 5, located on the left, has a part-glazed door with an overlight, flanked by 20th-century casement windows on each floor. There is a square-headed opening on the right, above which is the datestone with a horseshoe carved above the date. No. 5A has a door and a single window on each floor, similar to No. 5. The building has end stacks and a party wall ridge stack.

Inside, there are few exposed features. In No. 5, a former wall cupboard has been converted into a corner cupboard; it is made of oak and features two panels with 'TSE 1603' carved on the upper panel. In the pantry at the rear of No. 5A, there is a reused fragment of medieval masonry with a foliated cross. An early 20th-century photograph shows the building as The Ship Hotel with 19th-century fenestration.
