Description

The Church of St Cuthbert is a parish church that dates from the 13th century and includes some reset work from the 12th century. It is constructed of coursed, squared rubble with quoins on a chamfered plinth. The roof is made of graduated slate and features stone-flagged eaves on the north side. At the west end, there is a gabled bellcote from 1894 that incorporates finials from an earlier bellcote dated 1665, and there is an apex cross at the east end. The church consists of a single cell with a south aisle that was extended by one bay in 1605, marked by a datestone over a window from 1722. On the south side, there is a reset 12th-century doorway with a semicircular head. The church has a mix of 2- and 3-light windows from various periods. Inside, there is a 13th-century tomb slab featuring a wheeled cross and shears, which has been reset in the porch. The south arcade has two bays with pointed arches supported by a 13th-century freestanding octofoil pier. There are remains of a bracket piscina with an ogee head in the south aisle and an aumbrey with a pointed head in the south wall of the chancel. The chancel walls are lined with panelling from 18th-century box pews.
