Description
Motherby House and the adjoining barn/stables date from the early 19th century. The house is built of dressed pink sandstone with V-jointed quoins and features a graduated greenslate roof with coped gables and kneelers, along with ashlar twin candlestick chimney stacks. The barn and stables are constructed from whitewashed rubble with flush quoins and have a hipped graduated greenslate roof.
The house is two storeys high and consists of three bays, with a lower two-bay extension at the rear and a long lower barn/stables on the left. It has a panelled door with an overlight set in a pilastered surround beneath a cornice. The sash windows, which include glazing bars, are framed by mixed stone surrounds. The front wall of the barn/stables is mostly blank except for a plank door and irregular slit vents. The right return wall and the rear extension wall are slate hung, while the opposite wall of the extension features a door and sash windows with glazing bars in stone surrounds. The rear of the barn/stables includes several plank doors and loft doorways set in stone surrounds. There is an additional barn adjoining the extension, but it is not considered of interest. The building occupies a prominent position when approaching the village from the east.
