Description
The dovecote south of Hutton John is a building from the mid or late 17th century that has been converted into a smithy, with some alterations made in the late 19th century. It features mixed sandstone rubble walls and a graduated greenslate roof with coped gables and kneelers. The structure is square in shape and has plank doors set in a plain 19th-century opening, along with a small fixed-casement window to the right. A triangular gable opening, which is now blocked, still has its stone shelves. The return walls have small casement windows with stone surrounds and some slit vents. Inside, the dovecote originally had boulins, but these have been removed from one wall to accommodate a hearth and blacksmith's bellows, which remain in place. No boulins are left in the loft. The building is listed for its group value with Hutton John.
