Description

Bromleygreen is a farmhouse that was lengthened in 1687, with later additions and alterations. It is built from coursed, squared rubble with quoins on a plinth and is lime-washed. The graduated slate roof features corniced stone end chimneys. The two-storey, five-bay house has straight joints at either end, indicating that adjacent buildings were added and the height was raised.

The central entrance has a plank door with a fanlight and inserted sashes on either side. There is a small original fire window to the left and a blocked two-light mullioned window to the right. A continuous hoodmould with labels rises above the ground-floor openings, leading to the clear door. The sills of the original two-light mullioned windows are visible below the two inserted first-floor sashes, and the height of the intact (but blocked) window above the door shows the level of the earlier eaves. All sashes have glazing bars, and the original window surrounds are chamfered.

At the rear, there are later outshut and gabled extensions. The cross-passage entrance, which is incorporated in the byre-barn to the left, has an initialled and dated lintel ("C. & E.T." 1687), and there is a wagon door accessed by a ramp at the rear. A 18th-century extension to the south has stone coping with a kneeler at the rear of the roof and a segmental-headed wagon door. There are further 18th-century and late 19th-century byre extensions with a loft above, positioned at right angles.
