Description
The gateway to Appleby Castle courtyard, known as Gatehouse Cottage and Castle Moat Cottage, is likely mostly from the 17th century. It is constructed of grey stone and features a battlemented gateway. Gatehouse Cottage, which is attached to the west, is long and low with two storeys. It has three-light casement windows with flat stone mullions and 12-paned sash windows, which are alterations from the 18th century. Castle Moat Cottage, located further west, is a single-storey structure with a studded door and two 12-paned sash windows. Both cottages are integrated into the 17th-century curtain wall.
