Description
The Main Building of Appleby Castle is a Grade I listed structure located in Appleby-in-Westmorland. The building features grey stone rubble and ashlar construction. The north wall of the house, along with the western part of the north wing and the round tower, dates back to the 13th century. The eastern section was constructed in 1454. The castle was partly dismantled in 1648 but was restored by Lady Anne Clifford between 1651 and 1653. The house underwent significant rebuilding in 1686, with the north-west wing added in 1695. Further restoration occurred in the 19th century, during which sash windows were inserted.
