Description
Westgarth Hill and the adjoining barn are a farmhouse and barn dating from the late 17th century, with 19th-century alterations. The buildings are constructed from hammer-dressed red sandstone and feature a moulded cornice. The roofs are covered with red sandstone slates and have coped gables and kneelers, along with stone chimney stacks at the ends.
The farmhouse is two storeys high and consists of three bays. The main entrance is a plank door with a moulded architrave, a plain frieze, and a moulded cornice above. Above the door is a small Yorkshire sash window with a chamfered surround and the remains of a stone mullion. The flanking windows have been filled in, while other windows in the farmhouse are sashes with glazing bars set in enlarged openings.
The adjoining barn, located to the left and at right angles to the farmhouse, appears to be contemporary with or possibly older than the farmhouse. Its entrance features a chamfered surround and lintel, with a re-used stone to the right that has an incised initial "R." The ground and upper floor windows to the right of the barn originally had stone mullions but are now casements with glazing bars. The window to the left is a 19th-century casement in a plain surround. There is also an entrance to the left of the barn that has a quoined surround, which is recessed to accommodate a plank door. The listing does not include other outbuildings.
