Description
West Lodge to Abbey House, along with an attached gatehouse and wing walls, was built in 1914 for Vickers Ltd. The architect is unknown, and the structure is designed in the Tudor Revival style.
The lodge and gatehouse are made from rock-faced red sandstone with ashlar dressings, and the roof is concealed by a parapet. The plan features a rectangular lodge on the left side of a large square gatehouse, with attached wing walls; the southern wall includes a semi-octagonal turret.
The exterior showcases a chamfered plinth and quoining on all sides, with leaded glass windows on the west elevation. The gatehouse features a moulded, pointed arch beneath an architraved plaque displaying the date 1914 and the arms of Vickers Ltd. There are first-floor windows on either side of the gatehouse, which is topped by a parapet supported by a bold corbel table. A corbelled turret is located at the right corner, while a taller octagonal stair turret on the left has a door on its left side and transomed single-light windows along with blind loops beneath an oversailing parapet. Inside the archway, there is a coffered ceiling and broad arches on both sides fitted with timber and glass screens.
The two-storey lodge features a studded oak door and a mullioned window to the right, both beneath a continuous hoodmould, with a cross cross-window above. On the left, there is a two-storey canted bay with three transomed windows on each floor, and a tall stack rises from the front left return. The serpentine wing walls are constructed of rusticated sandstone with triangular copings, stepping up to square end piers topped with pyramidal caps. The right wing wall includes a small semi-octagonal turret, while the flanking wing wall with an octagonal turret contributes to the special interest of the listed building and is included in the listing.
The interior has not been inspected. It is noted that the dwelling attached to the rear of the right wing wall is not considered to have special architectural or historic interest.
