Description
The Church of St John Evangelist is a church built in 1874 by the architectural firm Paley and Austin. It is constructed of coursed slate rubble with sandstone ashlar dressings and features slate roofs with tile cresting. The building consists of a nave and chancel, along with a south vestry. The four-bay nave is adorned with lancet windows, including two lancets with a rose window above at the west end. On the north side, there is a gabled porch made of open timber frame resting on a stone base, and a buttress is located at the east end. The church has a slate-hung splayed spirelet above a bell stage, which includes traceried openings, and a cross is positioned on the east gable. The chancel features a round east end with small lancets set on a sill course. The south vestry has a hipped roof and a two-light straight-headed window with a corbelled lintel, along with an east entrance accessed by steps and a lateral stack. The interior has not been inspected, but it is noted that there are some stained glass windows.
