Description

Scarcroft Farmhouse, dating from the late 16th century to early 17th century, features later additions. It is constructed from coursed, squared pink sandstone blocks and has a graduated slate roof with copings on the oldest part of the house. The farmhouse has a two-storey front that is four bays wide, with the two-bay south end showcasing one four-light window on the ground floor to the right and three three-light windows, all in original chamfered stone surrounds but with later flat replacement mullions. A new window opening was created at the rear in 1983. A panelled door in the two-bay extension interrupts a blocked late 17th-century two-light mullioned window, while single windows on the first floor and to the right of the door are similar in style. The 19th-century symmetrical three-bay rear extension includes a central stair window with an interlaced semicircular head and two sashes on each floor. All windows are either fixed or sash types with glazing bars, and there is a hipped porch at the rear door.

Inside, the passage features a late 16th-century to early 17th-century wooden partition on the north side. The south end room has an original four-centred fireplace arch, while the middle room contains a large bracketed fireplace with an ogee head to the infill and a cast-iron range. A heck screen and a three-storey court cupboard dated 1672 are also present in this room, along with some early panelled doors. To the north, there is a range of byres and a ramp barn made of coursed, squared rubble, both covered by graduated slate roofs. The barn has a plank cross-passage door with wooden studs, a hay loft above, and two doors at ground level in the front, along with a ramp entrance at the rear.
