Description
Mary's Pillar is a memorial dated 1854, located on the east side of the road between Shap and Bampton Grange. It was erected by Mary Castley's father at her favorite viewpoint. The structure is made of rough-dressed stone blocks and stands on a plinth. It has a square plan and consists of three stages with banding, reaching approximately 20 feet in height overall. On the south-west elevation, the lower stage features a slab seat set in a narrow semicircular-headed recess. The middle stage has an oval panel inscribed with "MARY'S PILLAR 1854" in a shallow triangular-headed recess, while the top stage is pyramidal in shape.
