Description
The cross in Bampton Grange Cemetery is a boundary cross dating from the 14th century, located in a 20th-century cemetery. It is made of pink-grey sandstone and stands six feet tall. The cross features a square column with chamfered edges, topped by a weathered floral cross head, all resting on a 20th-century sandstone base. A bronze plaque affixed to the base states that this cross originally stood on Knipe Moor and was believed to mark the boundary for the manor belonging to Shap Abbey. It was later moved to the old school to serve as a gate post, where it was damaged. The cross was finally re-erected in its current location when the burial ground was consecrated on September 13, 1907.
