Description

Kirkby Thore Hall is a hall block with a solar wing, now functioning as a farmhouse. It dates back to the 14th century, with later additions and alterations. The building is constructed of wet-dashed rubble and features graduated slate roofs; the hall has a 30-degree pitch with an outshut at the front, while the solar has a steeper 45-degree pitch with stone-flagged eaves. Brick chimneys are located at the east end and at the junction of the hall and solar.

Originally, the hall was a single-storey structure with a three-bay front, but an upper floor was added in the 17th century. The central part-glazed door replaced a 16th-century mullioned window, although the lintel from the original window has been retained. To the left of the door is a three-light 17th-century window, and to the right is a 16th-century bay window that features five leaded lights on the front and two on the side, all of which are mullioned and transomed under a hoodmould. The east wall has three 19th-century sash windows, with no remnants of any earlier wing at this end.

The solar wing includes a three-light 16th-century mullioned window under a hoodmould on the ground floor to the north, and a pointed 14th-century mullioned window with two trefoil-headed lights and a blind quatrefoil between them on the first floor. The west side of the wing has two small original windows on the first floor and two 19th-century sashes on each floor. A panel on the south gable of the solar wing displays the Wharton arms. A lower 19th-century extension and a 20th-century barn conversion at the rear are not included in the listing.
