Description

The Church of St Mary is a parish church dating from the early 18th century, which incorporates parts of a medieval church. It features roughcast over red and calciferous sandstone rubble walls, topped with a graduated greenslate roof that has coped gables and kneelers. The structure includes a six-bay nave with a twin bellcote at the west end, a north aisle, and a two-storey west porch. The chancel is a single bay and has a north vestry along with barn-like lean-to sheds.

The porch is notable for its double doors set in a round-headed quoined surround, topped by a round-headed window. There are external dog-leg stone steps leading to a door on the upper floor of the north side. The nave features 18th-century round-headed leaded casement windows, with stone surrounds that have hinge brackets for shutters. The aisle has similar round-headed windows, while the chancel has blank walls and a three-light east window.

Inside, there is a 20th-century three-bay north aisle and a late medieval open timber roof. The late medieval chancel arch is also a significant feature. The church contains white marble wall plaques commemorating Bernard Kirkbride from 1677 and John Brown from 1765. Additionally, there is early 20th-century stained glass by Shrigley and Hunt of Lancaster, and the chancel displays the Royal Arms of Queen Victoria from 1856. There are also brass and white marble wall plaques dedicated to the James family of Barrock Park and Elizabeth Colomb from 1828 of Armathwaite Castle, along with early 20th-century stained glass in the east window.
