Description
St Anthony's Tower is a folly located approximately 150 metres east of the A6, north of Milnthorpe. It is likely from the early 19th century, as it was recorded to be in existence by 1832. The tower is constructed of stone rubble with a dressed stone corniced parapet and has a circular plan. It stands two storeys high and features five window openings that are not glazed, with roughly cut lintels and cills. Access to the first floor is provided by a flight of external steps leading to doors. The ground floor includes a window opening on the south side and slit openings on the remaining sides. The tower is a prominent landscape feature visible from a considerable distance, particularly from Dallam Towers. In 1832, the owner of Dallam Towers prevented further development along Church Street in Milnthorpe to preserve his view of the folly from his residence.
