Description
The Church of St Thomas is a Grade II listed church built in 1835 by George Webster to provide additional accommodation for the parish. It was consecrated on 5th July 1837 and has undergone later additions and alterations. The church is oriented north-east to south-west, with the altar at the east end. It features snecked rubble on a chamfered plinth, gabled tops to stepped buttresses between the bays, and a castellated parapet on the first and sixth bays, as well as the tower. The roof is covered with graduated slate.
The church has an integral west tower, an aisleless nave, and a chancel, with an octagonal vestry attached to the north side. The four-stage tower includes triple lancets on the ground floor, with a single lancet on either side in the adjoining bays. The second stage has three stepped lancets, the third stage features a clock from the Old Town Hall, and the fourth stage has paired lancet belfry openings. The nave consists of six bays, with a single projecting bay on either side of the chancel, paired lancets on the side walls, and three stepped lancets at the east end. The main entrance is located on the north side, leading through a single-storey hall that was added in the late 20th century, which is considered of no interest. The interior has been extensively remodelled.
