Description
The agricultural outbuildings located to the north-east of Howgill Castle were likely built in the late 19th century. They are arranged around a courtyard and constructed from squared, snecked rubble or coursed rubble, topped with hipped Welsh slate roofs. The south range was originally symmetrical, featuring a higher section with three wagon doors on each side of a larger arch that leads into the courtyard. There is a single wagon door and a tack-room at either end of the lower buildings. The barns and byres are accessed from the courtyard. The north range served as a steam threshing barn, with a sawmill built around 1880 attached externally on the west side, which is powered by an undershot waterwheel that is still in use.
