Description
The war memorial, cross, and enclosing walls are located approximately 40 meters north of the Church of St Michael in Beetham. The memorial commemorates those who served in the First World War, with an inscription dated 1914-1919. It features a sandstone cross set on sandstone steps, with limestone walls that have sandstone dressings and a copper plaque. The cross is designed in a Celtic style, with a tapering rectangular shaft on a stepped, battered plinth, topped by a wheel-head cross that includes a central annunciating angel holding a lily. The enclosing walls curve towards the entrance and are approximately 400 mm high, featuring a plinth, coping, rectangular balustrades, and elliptical end stops. The rear wall to the south has a moulded cornice and a central memorial tablet, which is topped by a carved stone wreath with ribbons that display the date. A later plaque has been added below to commemorate the Second World War, 1939-45.
