Description

The Linton-in-Craven War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1921, with additions for the Second World War. It is made of Bolton Woods sandstone and has a square plan.

The memorial is located at the entrance to the churchyard of the Church of St Michael and All Angels. It features a Latin cross with terminal caps, mounted on a collared shaft that has a splayed base. The shaft is topped by a corniced pedestal, which rises from a plinth that has an over-hanging cornice and a skirting on a single-stepped base.

On the north elevation of the pedestal, there is a recessed panel with an original incised dedication in black painted lettering that reads: "SALUTE THE BRAVE WHO GAVE/ THEIR ALL FOR US." The names of 12 individuals who fell in the Second World War are also incised here. The east and west elevations of the pedestal list the names of 28 individuals who fell in the First World War, while the south elevation features an inscription that states: “GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN/ THAN THIS.” Additionally, five more names from the First World War have been added to the east and west elevations of the plinth.

The north elevation of the plinth displays a laurel wreath carved in relief, with raised black painted figures indicating the years 1914 and 1919. Flanking the wreath are the incised dates of the Second World War: 1939 and 1945. The memorial is set on a paved square, surrounded by dry-stone rubble walls to the south, east, and west, and painted looped wrought-iron railings to the north, which include a central gate mounted on a stone kerb. On the east side, the wall meets the south-west corner of an earlier shelter and partially overlaps its gable.
