Description

LOWER HOLKER CARK-IN-CARTMEL SD 3676 9/137 Summer House approx 18.5.53 95m north-west of Cark Hall (q.v.) G,V. II Summer house. Probably late C17 or early C18. Stone rubble with quoins. 2-storey square structure, for many years roofless. East face has entrance with lintel, 1st floor has window with moulded reveals and escutcheon with initials: CR to lintel, originally cross-mullioned. South face has blocked 3-light single-chamfered-mullioned window with dripstone to ground floor; 1st floor has window with slightly chamfered reveals and transom, originally cross-mullioned. North and west faces have 1st floor windows, originally cross-mullioned. Initials believed to refer to Christopher Rawlinson (1677-1733), a noted antiquarian, who lived at Cark Hall. See J.C.
