Description

Nos. 6-12 Castle Street are two houses that have been converted into two shops. They were built in the late 18th century and have undergone some alterations since then. The buildings feature Flemish bond brickwork with light headers, an eaves cornice, and a modillioned gutter on Nos. 6 and 8. They have slate roofs with 18th and 19th century end brick chimney stacks and a gabled roof dormer on Nos. 6 and 8.

Nos. 6 and 8 are three storeys high with two bays. The left side has a 20th century door beneath a painted radial fanlight, set in an open-pedimented columned doorcase. The right side has an early 20th century shop front with a central door and flanking windows beneath an overall sign board. Above, there are sash windows with glazing bars in painted stone architraves. Between the first and second floor windows, the 19th century lettering "DYE WORKS" can be seen.

Nos. 10 and 12, located on the left, are also three storeys high but have three bays. They feature a 1970s shop front with left panelled doors set in a segmental-headed quoined carriage arch. The upper floors have sash windows, some with glazing bars, set in brick reveals with painted stone sills and flat brick arches.

Inside Nos. 6 and 8, there is a hall arch supported by fluted pilasters, 20th century doors in original fluted surrounds, and internal panelled shutters on the first floor. A full-height plain wooden staircase leads to the upper levels. In Nos. 10 and 12, there are panelled doors on the upper floors and a plain wooden staircase connecting the first and second floors. No. 10 was listed separately on September 20, 1988.
