Description

The Church of St Mary is a parish church that dates back to the medieval period, with repairs made in 1774 and 1785, a tower added in 1825, and restoration work completed in 1905. The building features a mix of large and small blocks of red sandstone and has a graduated greenslate roof with coped gables.

The church has a thin three-storey west tower that also serves as a porch, a three-bay nave, and a lower single-bay chancel. There is a side entrance in the tower with an alternate-block surround and voussoirs, as well as external stone steps leading to the first-floor west doorway, which has louvred vents above it and is topped with a battlemented parapet featuring pinnacles. The nave includes a blocked segmental-arched north door, a two-light Tudor window, and an original lancet window. The south wall has been heavily restored and features two- and three-light windows from 1905. The chancel contains four original lancet windows and a three-light east window from 1905.

Inside the nave, there is an open timber ceiling from 1905 and a three-light oriel window above the west door, also from that year. The walls display plaques dedicated to various local families, including one for Thomas Watson from 1823, created by Musgrave Lewthwaite Watson, which features a sculptured panel inspired by Fuseli's Three Witches. The chancel has a flat Tudor-style timber ceiling, and the lancet windows have rear arches. Additionally, there is a wall plaque with coats-of-arms dedicated to Thomas Denton, dated 1616.
