Description

This is a mid- to late 17th-century barn and an early 18th-century farmhouse. The building has cement rendered walls and a graduated greenslate roof, with brick chimney stacks. The farmhouse is two storeys high and has three bays, with a long barn to its left, all under a common roof. The farmhouse’s front door is accessed through a painted stone architrave, and it has sash windows with glazing bars set in painted stone surrounds. The barn has two doorways, one closest to the farmhouse with a 17th-century Tudor-arched surround under a hoodmould, which may have originally contained an inscription. There are loft doorways and openings with stone surrounds, and a through archway to the extreme left. The rear wall incorporates a coat-of-arms, believed by the owner to have originated from Holme Cultram Abbey. The building was probably the home of the Barwise family in the 17th century. A later barn extension is not of architectural interest.
