Description
The byres to the north of Bellbridge Farmhouse consist of a house and barn, now used as byres, which date back to 1688, as indicated by the inscription over the entrance reading "G. & F.B. (Bell) 1688." The structure is built from whitewashed sandstone rubble and features a Welsh slate roof with bottom courses of sandstone slate. The gables are coped and supported by kneelers.
This two-storey building has a two-bay former house on the left and a former barn on the right, both under a common roof. There is a single-storey right-angled extension at the front right, creating an overall L-shape. The central entrance has a half-plank door set in a rebated surround, topped by the dated and inscribed lintel. On either side of the door are casement windows with original chamfered surrounds, all beneath a continuous hoodmould. The upper floor features two-light stone-mullioned windows with chamfered edges and a central loft door. The former barn includes plank doors in chamfered surrounds, slit vents on two levels, and a loft doorway.
The junction in the stonework suggests that the house was built first. The extension is partly constructed of brick beneath a sandstone slate roof, while the rear wall is made of squared sandstone, likely the original late 17th-century farmyard wall, which ends in a square gate pier topped with a ball finial. This building is listed partly for its group value with Bellbridge Farmhouse.
