Description

NY 34 SE SEBERGHAM Bellbridge

9/154 Byres to north of Bellbridge Farmhouse

G.V. II

House and barn, now byres. Dated and inscribed over entrance G. & F.B. (Bell) 1688. Whitewashed sandstone rubble under Welsh slate roof with bottom courses of sandstone slate; coped gables aid kneelers. 2-storey. 2-bay former house with former barn to right under common roof; single-storey right-angled extension to front right forming overall L-shape. Central half-plank door in rebated surround with dated and inscribed lintel. Flanking casement windows in original chamfered surrounds under continuous hoodmould. Upper floor 2-light chamfered stone-mullioned windows and central loft door. Former barn has plank doors in chamfered surrounds. Slit vents on 2 levels and loft doorway. Junction in stonework suggest house was built first. Extension is partly of brick under sandstone slate roof, but rear wall is of squared sandstone and is probably the original late C17 farmyard wall, ending in a square gate pier under ball finial. Listed partly for G.V. with Bellbridge Farmhouse.
