Description
High House and the adjoining barn are a farmhouse and barn dated 1677, as noted on the lintel stone from the house that has been incorporated into the barn. The initials E(&)A.A. on the stone refer to Edward and Anna Armstrong. The front wall is incised and rendered, while the rear is made of whitewashed sandstone rubble. The building features a Welsh slate roof and 19th-century stone chimney stacks.
The structure is two storeys high and consists of three bays, with a two-bay extension under a common roof to the left and a barn positioned at right angles to the rear. The central ground floor window is a 20th-century replacement for what was likely the original entrance. To the left, there is an enlarged 19th-century window, and to the right, a small original window remains. The upper floor windows are 20th-century casements set within original chamfered surrounds, while the extension has 20th-century windows as well.
A single-storey extension at the rear is constructed from stone sourced from the nearby Roman Wall. The barn is also built from Roman Wall stone and has a Welsh slate roof. It features a large cart entrance with a plank door to the left, a central half plank door with slit vents above, and an entrance to the right that includes a reused moulded architrave along with a dated and inscribed lintel. The listing excludes other outbuildings.
