Description
Gelt Bridge is a railway bridge over the River Gelt, built between 1832 and 1835 for the Newcastle and Carlisle Railway. It features an inscription on a panel in the abutment arch that reads "GELT BRIDGE/FRANCIS GILES CIVIL ENGINEER/JOHN MCKAY BUILDER," with the dates presented in Roman numerals. There is a similar Latin inscription on the opposite abutment. The bridge is constructed from channelled rusticated red sandstone ashlar, with smooth voussoirs that have V-joints and an iron railing parapet. It has three large skew arches supported by two piers, making it one of the earliest and largest skew arched bridges in the country.
