Description

The King Edward I Monument is a Grade II* listed structure located in Burgh by Sands, built in 1685 by Thomas or John Longstaff for the Duke of Norfolk and John Aglionby. This monument is made of red sandstone ashlar and features a tall square column that stands on a moulded plinth, with a moulded cornice and a shaped cap topped by a cross.

On the south side, there is a Latin inscription commemorating Edward I, who died in his camp at Burgh by Sands on 7 July 1307. The east side bears an inscription detailing the titles of Henry Howard, Duke of Norfolk, along with the date 1685, while the west side includes an inscription for John Aglionby. The monument also originally had an inscription stating "Tho Longstaff, Fecit 1685," which is referenced in a manuscript at St Edmund Hall, Oxford.

A bronze plaque on the monument records its restoration by the Earl of Lonsdale in 1803 after it collapsed in March 1795, with further restoration occurring in 1876. For the complete inscription, refer to W. Hutchinson's "History of Cumberland," published in 1794.
