Description
The entrance gate piers and wall to the east of Cumberland Infirmary were likely built in the early 1930s. The structure features a brick wall that is partly set on a chamfered plinth, with all dressings made of calciferous sandstone. It has a stone cornice and coping, along with tall squared piers that have stepped caps and urn finials. Between the piers, there is patterned cast- and wrought-iron work that originally supported a gate, which is now missing. The wall to the right of the gate is taller and connects to the main hospital building, featuring an additional pedestrian gate. The left wall begins at the same height but steps down to a lower level. This new entrance appears to be part of the 1930s renovations when an extra storey was added to the main building. The continuation of the plain brick wall down Infirmary Street is not of interest. The wall is included for its group value only.
