Description
The walls, railings, gates, and gate piers at the front and east side of the Hospital of St. John date from around 1770. They are constructed of English garden wall bond brick with pitched stone coping, featuring spearhead railings. The side walls are similar but have concrete coping. The front piers are made of limestone ashlar, with a chamfered plinth and plain cappings that support a wrought-iron overthrow with a lantern. The double cast-iron gates are adorned with spearheads. The side gate on the east wall has iron posts topped with small urn finials. Additionally, there is a stone and iron bootscraper built into the wall to the right of the main gates.
