Description
The Hospital of St. John is a pair of almshouses that were rebuilt in 1769. The building is constructed of Flemish bond brick with stone dressings and features a tiled hipped roof with a brick stack. It is arranged in a 'U' shape around three sides of a courtyard and is two stories high with five-windowed façades that include sash windows.
The central bay projects forward and is adorned with chamfered rusticated quoins and a pediment displaying the arms of the Hungerford family. The entrance door consists of six fielded panels set within a moulded stone architrave, flanked by two 12-pane sash windows in beaded architraves. A plat band runs along the first floor, which features five 9-pane sashes in moulded architraves and a moulded stone eaves cornice.
Atop the pediment is an octagonal wooden cupola with a gilded clock face and arched openings, topped with a lead domed roof. Each wing facing the courtyard has a door with six fielded panels in a moulded architrave, complete with a flat stone hood supported by brackets. The wings also contain two sashes and one blind sash on the ground floor, with three 9-pane sashes and one blind sash on the first floor, all sharing the same eaves cornice and chamfered rusticated quoins.
The front gables feature a 12-pane sash on the ground floor and a 9-pane sash on the first floor. The left side of the west wing has tripartite sashes on the ground floor and 6-pane sashes on the first floor. The right side of the east wing has a central half-glazed door in a stone architrave with a 20th-century hood, flanked by three sashes on either side. The first floor has a plat band and seven sashes, along with three 20th-century hipped dormers on the roof. The rear of the building has sashes similar to those on the front and includes a 20th-century flat-roofed extension.
The interior has been altered in the 20th century. The hospital was endowed by Margaret, Lady Hungerford around 1472 and was rebuilt following a fire around 1765.
