Description

35 Tangier Street is a shop that was originally built as a motor car salesroom and workshop around 1905. The building is rendered, likely with sandstone, although the material is not visible, and features a diminishing slate roof with red crested ridge tiles. It stands two storeys tall and has a plan that includes a shop with offices above, along with vehicular access and a workshop located in a lower rear wing.

The front of the building has a four-window range, with the right-hand window bay curved to follow the street corner. The shop front is intact, showcasing a dentilled fascia and pedimented pilasters, each adorned with decorative plaster motifs of fruit suspended from a shell. The plate glass windows each have three upper lights, and there is a deeply recessed half-glazed door. The first-floor windows are set under pediments on console brackets and feature horned sashes in reveals, with glazing bars only on the upper sash. Decorative plaster festoons are located between the pediments, and the right-hand sash is curved to fit the corner. A moulded gutter box with an egg and dart design is also present.

At the rear, there is a wing that includes one three-light window under a cornice on console brackets. Inside, there is evidence of the rear vehicular access and workshop. This building represents a good example of an early 20th-century shop front and holds significance as an important remnant of the early motor-car trade, having been purpose-built while incorporating traditional architectural motifs. In 1910, it was occupied by H S Jacques, a motor-car retailer, one of the few operating in Cumberland at that time.
