Description

Charlock Farmhouse is a farmhouse built around 1840, constructed of coursed squared limestone with hipped slate roofs and white brick ridge and lateral stacks. The building is two stories high and features a central block with three windows, flanked by lower wings on either side that each have two windows. The central entrance has a double-leaf part-glazed door with panelled reveals, sheltered by a shallow porch supported by unfluted Doric columns, which hold up a full entablature and pediment. The windows on the ground and first floors are 12-pane sash windows; those in the central block have stone lintels and keyblocks, while the wings have segmental-arched heads. The central bay projects slightly forward and includes a low pedimental gable with a string course at the base and a blank rectangular sunk panel. The central block also features a plinth and a storey band.

The symmetrical design is complemented by single-storey outbuilding wings, each with three blank round-headed arches with stone sills. The left wing contains a five-bay cartshed that is open to the yard at the rear on timber posts, while the right wing accommodates various outbuildings and connects to an extensive range of farm buildings that have been significantly altered and largely enclose the yard at the back. Inside, the house features an open-well staircase with stick balusters and a ramped and wreathed handrail, along with stone flagged floors. This farmhouse is one of several model farms constructed for the 4th Duke of Grafton between 1839 and 1844.
