Description
Canons Ashby House features South Lion gates and gatepiers to the garden, dating from the early 18th century, with the gates added in the 19th century. The structure is made of ironstone ashlar. The gatepiers have moulded stone plinths, cornices, and panelled sides, supporting demi-lions rampant that have protruding tongues and hold globes on staves with their two paws. These lions represent a version of the Dryden family crest and face each other. Carved console brackets are located on the walls beside the piers. The 19th-century wrought iron gates include an overthrow. The gardens and park at Canons Ashby are also recognized in the Historic Buildings and Monuments Commission Register of Gardens at Grade II*.
