Description

Canons Ashby House features garden walls, a gate, and gatepiers that date from the early 18th century. The walls are made of coursed squared ironstone with some limestone dressings. They form the southern boundary of the Green Court and are topped with a high stone coping. A row of eared stone urns and consoles is located where the wall meets the southwest angle of Canons Ashby House and at the far end of the Green Court where it meets the pier at this corner.

The pier has a moulded plinth and cornice, plain sides, and an obelisk supported by four stone scrolls. There is a reused 16th-century doorway with a four-centred moulded arch head and carved spandrels that provides access from the Green Court to the garden. From the pier at the southwest angle of the Green Court, a low stone-coped wall runs north to the gates of the Green Court, featuring timber posts at intervals with pierced finials that support two wrought iron rails.

Another high stone-coped wall extends south from the Green Court to the gates and gatepiers leading to the park. The gatepiers have moulded plinths and cornices, plain sides, and large eared and gadrooned urns, with 19th-century iron gates. From the gates to the park, a similar wall runs south to a pier at the southwest angle of the garden. This pier has renewed stone armour on a square moulded base with splayed feet. From this pier, a low wall retains the garden and provides views of the park, turning east then northeast to retain the southeast corner of the terrace and extending south to the Lion gates at the bottom of the orchard.
