Description
Church Cottage is a cottage dated 1863, built from coursed squared ironstone with a tile roof and stone stacks at the ends and ridge. It has a two-unit plan, is two storeys high with an attic, and features a three-window range. The entrance has a 20th-century plank door set within a doorway that has a four-centred arch, a hood mould, and carved spandrels. To the left of the door is a three-light mullion window, and to the right is a similar two-light window, both with hood moulds. There is also a door with a four-centred chamfered arch to the right. All doors and windows have stone relieving arches. Above the front door is a datestone with a hood mould inscribed with the initials HF/D and the year 1863. The first floor has two-light mullion windows. The gables are stone coped with kneelers. The initials on the datestone belong to Sir Henry Dryden, known as 'The Antiquary', and his wife Frances. This cottage is a notable example of the extensive rebuilding of estate housing carried out by Sir Henry Dryden and is included for its group value.
