Description

Canons Ashby House features gates and gatepiers leading to the Green Court, dating from the early 18th century. The structure is made of ironstone ashlar with limestone dressings. The gatepiers have moulded plinths and cornices, with panelled sides and thin moulded obelisks on octagonal feet, supported by pairs of stone scrolls at each corner. The original painted oak gates have barley sugar twist rails and 'Venetian window' arches on each leaf, featuring Tuscan columns and keyblocks that connect to a shaped top rail. The gates are fitted with H-hinges. The National Trust has recently restored the gates, incorporating much new timber. The gardens and park of Canons Ashby are included in the Historic Buildings and Monuments Commission Register of Gardens at Grade II.
