Description
The Arches is a garden building from the mid-18th century that was altered in the 20th century. It is constructed of limestone ashlar and faces the former park of Horton Hall, which was demolished in 1936. The structure features a tripartite triumphal arch with Ionic pilasters set on panelled plinths. The arches are rusticated and have keyblocks, with the arches on either side of the central arch being lower and originally blank. Above the outer arches are circular blank panels with keyed stone surrounds. An entablature is inflected over the pilasters, and there is a stone-coped parapet. The right bay has a cottage behind it, while another cottage is located behind the left bay, which was formerly a barn. Both cottages have 20th-century canted bay windows that align with the outer arches. During the renovation of the left building, an original wrought-iron tie beam was discovered, stamped with the year 1769.
