Description

The French Partridge Restaurant is a building that serves as both a restaurant and a dwelling, originally functioning as a farmhouse and coaching inn. It dates from the late 17th century and mid-18th century, with alterations made in the 20th century. The older section is constructed of coursed limestone rubble, while the newer part is made of red brick in English bond, both of which are rendered at the front. The building features 20th-century ridged tile roofs, with rendered brick and stone ends, as well as ridge and internal stacks.

The structure has a single and double-depth plan, is two storeys high with an attic, and has a nine-window range. To the left of the center, there is a four-window range that includes a "French" window and 20th-century 16-pane windows, likely replacing earlier sash windows, all with stone sills and rendered heads. The five-window range to the right of the center features a four-panelled part-glazed door on the far left, flanked by painted stone Tuscan columns with a plain frieze and timber pediment. There is also a 20th-century part-glazed door with an overlight to the right of the center, surrounded by render. The ground and first floors have 12-pane sash windows with rendered heads.

Additional architectural details include ironstone plinths, quoins on the left range, wood modillion eaves on the right range, and stone-coped gables with kneelers and 20th-century roof dormers. The right range has a double-span roof. Inside, the building features chamfered spine beams and a re-arranged staircase with turned column-on-vase balusters. The French Partridge Restaurant was formerly known as the Gunning Arms and earlier as Horton Inn Farm.
