Description
The Paddock is a house that was formerly a lodge, built in the mid-19th century and altered in the 20th century. It is constructed from limestone ashlar with lead roofs and features a central stone ridge stack. The building has a cruciform plan and stands two storeys tall.
The principal elevation faces Brafield Road and is characterized by a row of giant Ionic pilasters that frame the central bay, flanked by narrower bays on either side. The ground floor has a central sash window with a moulded stone surround, a pulvinated frieze, and a moulded cornice. Above, there is a shorter sash window in the centre of the first floor, which has a moulded sill and surround. The bays on either side of the central bay feature shallow round-headed niches on the ground floor and circular niches on the first floor.
The building has a plinth, a moulded ground floor sill band, and a full entablature with a pulvinated frieze and a pediment at the gable. These architectural details extend around the entire building, with all gables featuring pediments.
To the right, there is a wing facing The Drive, which has a similar design but omits the niches and the frieze of the ground floor window. The side facing Brafield Road includes a six-panel part-glazed door with a moulded stone surround. A projecting wing at the rear mirrors the main composition but has a blank central window on the ground floor with a moulded stone sill and surrounds, along with a pair of small blank windows on the first floor above, which only have moulded sills. The bays on either side have sash windows with moulded sills and surrounds on both floors.
The left wing has similar windows but lacks the pilasters and features an additional single-storey projecting wing, which was altered in the 20th century and has a pedimented gable. All the sash windows are horned and consist of four large panes.
The Paddock is one of a pair of lodges that served as the entrance to the former principal drive to Horton Hall, which was demolished in 1936. The architectural style of the lodges is inspired by that of the New Temple.
