Description
This group consists of three headstones and three chest tombs located approximately 2 meters east of the chancel of the Church of Holy Cross. The tombs date from the 17th century to the early 19th century and are made of ironstone and sandstone, commemorating members of the Howes family.
The headstones are made of ironstone and feature shaped tops. The northernmost headstone bears an inscription for Thomas Howes, who died in 1662. The middle headstone is also for Thomas Howes, who died in 1706, and includes a vine motif. The southern headstone is similar and commemorates Elizabeth Howes.
The chest tomb to the north, made of ironstone, has panelled corners and inscriptions in cartouches on the south side for John Howes, who died in 1727, and his wife Mary Howes, who died in 1740. The middle chest tomb is made of red sandstone with panelled corners, while the southern chest tomb is made of yellow sandstone with reeded corners, both dating from the early 19th century.
