Description
Culworth Forge is a cottage and forge dating from the late 18th century. It is constructed of coursed limestone rubble with a corrugated tile roof and has flanking brick stacks. The building is two storeys high and consists of two bays. The central doorway features a wood lintel and a plank door, while there are three-light casement windows with wood lintels on either side. On the first floor, there are similar two-light windows.
Adjoining the cottage to the left is the forge, built of coursed ironstone rubble and topped with a corrugated iron roof. This structure is one storey with a loft, although the loft storey has been rebuilt in brick at the rear and it has three bays. There is a 19th-century extension at the front, made of brick and also one storey with three bays. This extension includes a central doorway with a wood lintel and a plank stable door, flanked by windows that each contain 16 narrow lights with wood glazing bars. The interior has not been inspected, but it is reported that the forge contains an old open fireplace.
