Description
The Old Rectory, along with its attached stable block and outbuilding, is a house built in the late 18th century, with alterations and additions in the 19th and 20th centuries. The main building is constructed from coursed limestone rubble, with hipped slate roofs and brick lateral stacks. The layout is in a T shape, featuring a central three-story pavilion with a canted projection. This projection is rendered and has 12-pane sash windows, each with a blank round trefoiled head. The two-story, two-window symmetrical flanking wings also have similar windows, with brick jambs and heads. A four-panel part-glazed door, topped with an overlight and a matching round head, is situated on the far right of the facade. Ironstone quoins are present. A single-story stable block is attached to the left, featuring a centrally blocked door with a round-arched head, flanked by nine-pane sash windows with flat-arched heads and keyblocks, all under a half-hipped slate roof. A lower, single-story outbuilding connects the stable block to the main building. A datestone above the door is inscribed "EB/1796". On the garden front, the three-story projection has canted sash windows; those on the ground floor have segmental-arched brick heads and a crow-stepped gable. Inside, the hall and staircase hall have a chequered stone-paved floor. The open well staircase has a wood trellis balustrade, painted black to imitate a cast-iron design, with a ramped and wreathed mahogany handrail, and carved tread ends. The library, located in the garden projection, contains fitted bookcases with segmental-arched heads.
