Description

The buildings at 1, 3 and 5 The Avenue comprise a row of cottages dating to the 17th and 18th centuries, unified and remodelled in the mid-19th century as model cottages. They are constructed of coursed squared ironstone, with the central three bays distinguished by banding of limestone. The roofs are covered in plain tiles, and brick stacks rise from the ridge and end of the building, with the two to the right standing on stone bases.

The cottages are arranged over two storeys and have an attic. The façade has a nine-window range. Each cottage has a four-panel door, with No.5 having a stop-chamfered lintel above the door while the others have flat arches with keyblocks. All doors are part-glazed, and are sheltered by steep gabled timber hoods supported on brackets. Windows are predominantly two- and three-light casements, some with flat-arched heads and keyblocks, others with timber lintels.

No.3, dating to the 17th century, has a raised section featuring a small, rectangular, double-chamfered window with a hood mould on the ground floor to its right. The rear of No.5 features a two-light cavetto mullion window to the left.

The interiors of Nos.1 and 3 have not been inspected, though the interior of No.5 contains a bar-stop-chamfered spine beam and an open fireplace with an ogee-stop-chamfered cambered bressumer.
