Description

The Firs is a house built in the early 19th century. It is constructed of red brick with pale headers and features a slate hipped roof with a central brick chimney stack. The building is two stories high and has a three-window range that faces the rear. The central entrance consists of a four-panel part-glazed door, which is adorned with an ornamental overlight and framed by a pilastered wood surround topped with a flat hood. All the windows are fitted with 16-pane sashes, stone sills, and moulded stone lintels. Inside, there is a stone-paved staircase hall, and the staircase features stick balusters, a mahogany hand-rail, and a cast-iron ornamental standard. The house was built before 1817 by William Johnson, a stonemason, for his own occupation.
