Description
The Creaton Memorial Cross is located in the churchyard of St Michael's Church, which is designated as Grade II*. This memorial stands 4 meters tall and is made of Derbyshire stone, featuring a simple Celtic wheel-head design. The inscription "LEST WE FORGET" is found near the top of the square-sectioned shaft, which rises from a tapering plinth set on a three-stepped square base.
The front of the plinth bears the inscription: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN/ GRATEFUL REMEMBRANCE/ OF THOSE MEN/ FROM THIS VILLAGE/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN/ THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1919./ FAITHFUL UNTO DEATH." The names of those who died, including those from the Second World War, are listed on the sides of the plinth. On the rear face, the inscription reads: "SO THEY PASSED OVER/ AND ALL THE TRUMPETS/ SOUNDED FOR/ THEM ON THE OTHER SIDE./ LET THOSE/ THAT COME AFTER SEE TO IT/ THAT THEIR NAMES BE/ NOT FORGOTTEN."
