Description
Station Lodge is a lodge built in 1868 by E.W. Godwin. It is constructed from coursed squared limestone with limestone dressings and features plain-tile roofs along with stone end and lateral stacks. The building includes a gatehouse and an attached double-depth-plan lodge cottage, rising to two and three storeys, creating a picturesque composition.
The three-storey gatehouse has a moulded segmental-arched carriage arch with semi-circular responds, flanked by offset buttresses. The spandrels of the arch display shields with the Compton arms. Above the arch, there is a two-light leaded ovolo-moulded stone mullion window, and a string course runs at sill level. A narrow one-light window with a chamfered stone surround is located in the gable above, which features a stone-coped gable with kneelers and a seated dragon finial at the apex.
To the left, there is a single-storey wing with quoins and a stone-coped gable with kneelers, but this side has no windows. A circular stair turret rises from the two-storey, one-window attached lodge house on the right. The turret includes slit windows with chamfered stone surrounds, chamfered eaves, and a conical roof topped with a ball finial, extending above the gatehouse.
The doorway to the house, located at the foot of the stair turret, has a 20th-century door, curved stone jambs, a moulded stone lintel, and a pointed arched panel above that frames a cartouche of arms. The ground and first floors feature four-light chamfered stone mullion windows, with the ground floor window including a transom, both being leaded. A single-storey lean-to extension is situated to the right. The carriageway has a stone tunnel vault with three ovolo-moulded ribs and cast-iron double-leaf gates. The lodge is positioned at the head of the road leading to Earls Barton and the former station.
