Description
Springfield House is a 17th-century house located on Glovers Lane in Middleton Cheney. It is constructed from squared coursed ironstone and limestone, topped with an artificial stone slate roof and features brick stacks. The building has two storeys and an attic, with three bays.
A 20th-century gabled porch is positioned to the left of the center, featuring an entrance with a four-centre stone arch. The left and right bays on the ground floor have four-light stone mullioned windows with square hoods, while a smaller two-light window with a stone mullion and square hood is located to the right of the entrance. On the first floor, there are three-light stone mullioned windows with square hoods in the left and right bays, and a similar two-light window is found to the right of the center. The gable ends are stone coped with kneelers.
The right side of the house has stone mullioned windows with square hoods, consisting of four lights on the ground floor, three lights on the first floor, and two lights in the attic. An 18th-century extension to the left uses similar materials and has one bay, two storeys, and an attic, with wood casement windows featuring wood lintels.
Inside, there is an open fireplace with a bread oven and an original newel stair to the right of the entrance. The interior also features stop-chamfered beams. The house is said to be mentioned in a marriage settlement dated 1666, according to information from the owner, Mr. M. Stone.
