Description

The Old Grammar School, built around 1688 and founded by John Langham of Cottesbrooke, is now divided into five houses. The building features Lias ashlar stone with a stone slate roof. The main block on the south facade was originally used as a school room and dormitory, consisting of two storeys with an attic and cellar. It has a four-window range, with the left bay projecting forward to create a gabled two-storey porch. This porch includes a mezzanine and attic, featuring a semi-circular arched entrance with oval window returns. There is a 19th-century plank door with stop hinges and a stone flight below. The windows are three-light stone mullioned with cross transoms and 20th-century diamond leaded panes. The building has ashlar gable parapets and kneelers, with brick stacks at either end. Above the entrance, there is a sundial dated 1821, flanked by single-light mezzanine windows. To the left of the entrance is a similar late 17th-century master's house, which is a single storey with an attic and a three-window range, also featuring stone mullions, an ashlar gable parapet, kneelers, and a central brick stack. An ashlar string course runs between the ground and first floors throughout the building. The rear has similar flanking wings, with a central projecting wing that mainly contains 20th-century casement windows. The interior has been remodeled in the 20th century to create five houses, with some re-set chamfered fireplace lintels.
